–     Experience the unique Otterstad mountain summer farm

Guided tours with traditional meals served at the chalet

Otterstad is Modalen’s best preserved and most complete mountain summer farm, located in the Otterstad Conservation Area just a 40 minute walk from Grønhaug on Mofjord. The tour starts at Grønhaug and the old well-preserved trail follows the watercourse through different forest types including temperate broadleaf and mixed forests, spruce and birch. There is one trail for the animals and another quicker and steeper trail for hikers.

The trip begins with the water power history of Modalen from past to present. The first people to use water power were precisely those at Otterstad. Next, a description of life and customs during the summers at an alpine farm and the role these traditions have played on Western Norwegian farm communities will be examined. The tour ends with a meal based predominantly on local products at the chalet: flat bread, cured and smoked meats, butter from the farm, sour cream and coffee and dessert.

The season begins June 15th, while the last trips are scheduled for the end of September. A mushroom-picking class led by an approved expert will also be offered in connection with specific tours in September. Please contact the below number for more information.

It is also possible to stay overnight at the newly renovated chalet at Otterstad summer farm. There are 6 beds in total.
