Teigdalen

The villages of Brekkhus and Århus crown the thirteen kilometer long valley of Teigdalen, which ends its relatively short and flat journey at Lake Evanger. The weather can be harsh in this valley where strong wind gusts sweep down from the high mountains. Many places in the valley only have eight hours of sunshine a day, even during the summer solstice due to the towering peaks.  A handful of farms are perched high up on the mountainsides, accessible only by foot and aerial cable, to take advantage of the milder climate provided by the additional access to life-giving sunlight.

The farms in Teigdalen were historically renowned for their production of spinning wheels, fiddles, wood carvings, metal work, metal drills and fittings and pinnakjøtt (salted and dried ribs of mutton). Today, Teigdalen and Evanger still produce Norway’s best pinnakjøtt, in addition to a variety of other meat specialties.

Trout and salmon swim up the Teigdal River from Lake Evanger, and the trout in particular is plentiful and excellent. Stølsheimen and the Norwegian Trekking Association’s network of cabins are accessible via Brekkhus/Århus and Fenndalen valley. Teigdalen is also part of National Bicycle Trail # 4.

Gourmets, white-water rafting, cycling, fishing and hiking enthusiasts will all find something to enjoy during their stay amidst the dramatic beauty that is Teigdalen.
